Espaillat Expects Immigration To Be 2nd Term Priority for Obama
With President Barack Obama winning another four years in office, thanks in part to a strong turnout among Latino voters, expect a renewed push for immigration reform in his second term, state Sen. Adriano Espaillat said last night. “He had a shot in his first four years, and he couldn’t do it,” said Espaillat, a Dominican American. “But I think many people are waiting for him to jump start that and to make that one of his legislative priorities in his next four years.” Espaillat, who blamed Republicans in Congress for the lack of progress, said changes to the country’s immigration laws could boost the economy. “He is a Democrat and has the backing of the Democratic Party, as was shown tonight,” Espaillat added. “And if things go wrong, we’ve got his back.”
