John Haggerty, Convicted Of Stealing Bloomberg’s Money, At BOE For Ulrich [UPDATED]

A source at the New York City Board of Elections tells us that none other than John Haggerty showed up this afternoon on behalf of Republican Queens Councilman Eric Ulrich’s Senate campaign.

According to the source, Haggerty, donning a baseball cap as he entered the BOE, showed up to submit petition signatures — though Ulrich’s campaign said that Haggerty was actually there to access the BOE’s Candidate Records Unit, while a campaign staffer named Mike Michel formally submitted petitions. Yet our BOE source also says only Haggerty signed in at the Board’s front desk.

Haggerty was convicted last December of stealing $750,000 in campaign funds from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He is currently appealing the verdict, but faces up to four years in prison if he is unsuccessful.

Ulrich’s Senate campaign spokeswoman brushed off the fact that a convicted felon was seen taking a public role in the councilman’s campaign.

“We are really happy with our petitioning response,” said Ulrich spokeswoman Jessica Proud. “Council Member Ulrich turned in nearly 3,000 signatures from every corner of the senate district today.  That’s what counts.”

John Haggerty has long been a political ally of Ulrich, whose former chief of staff is Haggerty’s brother, Bart. The two brothers have unsuccessfully sought to overthrown Queens Republican Party chairman Phil Ragusa.

Well-known for his election law skills,  Haggerty has also long been a fixture during Board of Elections proceedings.

Ulrich is running in a Republican Senate primary in eastern Queens against attorney Juan Reyes, who has the support of the Queens Republican Party. Ulrich, who is the favorite in the GOP primary and has the backing of the Senate Republicans, would face Democratic State Sen. Joe Addabbo in November.

Update: An adviser to Ulrich’s campaign wrote in to note that Michel may not have signed in at the Board of Elections because, “You don’t need to sign in to submit petitions. You just need to clock them in at the desk. You need to sign in to go inside.”

    Jessica

I hate to break it to you but what really counts is that your client still associates with convict, crooks, liars and the sort of people who a public official shouldn’t be associated with.

As the saying goes you can tell a lot about a man by the people he associates with.

  • MidVil Momma

Consorting with convicted felons? This guy is a jerk.

  • smell the coffee

Ulrich obviously does not think character counts. I do, so my vote goes to Juan Reyes.

  • pete

This past year Ulrich was one of 5 NYC Councilman to engage in an experiment for funding called participatory budgeting…a concept that began in Brazil, used somewhat in Canada and recently used in Chicago. Locals – not the pols, nor the planners @ City Hall – decide where the Councilman’s money s/b spent. Open assemblies last Fall, at which people made proposals on what they wanted funded and then committees throughout the winter met to narrow them down, and then back to assemblies of locals and then voting. Fabulously Jeffersonian. Anyway, Ulrich district got more votes on the various proposals (you know, for the schools, for the firefighters, for the libraries, etc., etc.) than other districts where they experimented, including one in Park Slope. And, by the way, it was Bart Haggerty who shepherded all these assemblies and all those committees thru the Fall, Winter and Spring. He did a magnificent job. Best…PJS

PS Oh and by the way, locals (Dems and Reps alike) are confounded why Queens County GOP would be endorsing someone else for this up-coming State Senate race.

  • Norm

Hey Pete, nice to see that Jeffersonian politics is alive and well. If Bart Haggerty is responsible for so much of Ulrich’s perceived success, why isn’t Bart running instead?

Could it be because Bart Haggerty accepted all that money his brother stole from Bloomberg for that house in Forest Hills?

People who file petitions do not sign in at the front desk since they never go beyond the front counter. People who go to the Candidate Records Unit sign in and are escorted to the CRU. The campaign’s explanation is credible.

    • Paladin

Marty nice try to cover for your clients. I know the Haggerty bros have paid you well in their effort to topple the Queens GOP leadership. However, you are wrong. Anyone doing business at the BOE must sign in, even just to file petitions. This is par for the course for Ulrich and his den of thieves. They all belong in jail. Ulrich, Haggerty, Ognibene and Michel. All have been under investigation by the DA and all remain under ethical clouds. What a crew.

  • Norm

People who file petitions and then go to the CRU sign in at the front desk. Haggerty is a convicted felon and should not be filing Ulrich’s petitions or researching for him at the CRU.

As a convicted felon, Haggerty’s right to vote was suspended. He will be reinstated as a voter upon completion of his prison sentence or vacating of his conviction. Since he wasn’t convicted of violating the election, he is not barred from other political activity. It’s now a matter of public perception. I guess there are those who want Haggerty to wear a scarlet letter “F”.

  • Norm

How about a scarlet letter T for thief?

  • Tom

This event manifests one fact in detail: The Queens Republican party bench ain’t deep.

  • Gwen

Deep? That a 20-something whose experience was a baggage checker at JFK is a City Councilman is proof of how bad the GOP is. And Skelos handpicked this dweeb?

  • Aname

The real crime in connection with Haggerty’s conviction may be that Bloomberg got away with posing as a victim instead of being a co-defendant. I don’t like Bloomberg (can you tell?) but he’s too smart to let $ 3/4 million get ”stolen” from his campaign coffers. That money was intended as a payoff for something, and Haggerty (no sympathy for him, though) just took the fall for everyone involved. Anyway, that’s my opinion.

  • Jon

Eric’s closest advisers are folks of the highest repute – John Haggerty, Dennis Gallagher, Thomas Ognibene, Joni Yoswein, Frank Macchiarola & Brendan Dugan. How could any Queens Republican not jump in line with such an all-star team of political players.

Eric why do you give those who oppose you more ammunition ?

Why does John need to stay in the spot light ?

WHy does he need to see his name in the papers and on blog ?

If he was really a “FREIND” to Eric he would STAY AWAY but I guess he cannot he needs the attention and that is very SAD.

John Haggerty is teamed up with Mike Michel? What would Fran Werner say, VJ?

    • http://www.vjmachiavelli.blogspot.com VJ Machiavelli

Politics makes strange bedfellows and this is the strangest of them all.

Then again birds of a feather flock together.

Eric has some how united enemies and in turn has become enemies of those who are there enemies.

But the question remains why is John Haggerty who is “FRIENDS” with Eric needs all the attention ?

He seems to crave it and he still does not understand that he did a No NO.

He could of had a BIG FAT PAYCHECK from “The Prisoner of City Hall” but instead he chose to be a non paid Volunteer while his brother Bart cashed in.

But John did some how talk “The Prisoner of City Hall” to fund his Assembly District committee to the tune of 120,000.00 which he is the treasure.

It should be interesting to see how he spent the money in the past six months.

John needs attention he needs to be a BIG SHOT and he cannot understand he BLEW IT and may very well have to go to jail if his appeal is denied.
