Lappin Lands First Union Endorsement [updated]
UFCW Local 1500 is endorsing Jessica Lappin in her race for Manhattan Borough president in 2013, giving the candidate her first union endorsement in the campaign. “Jessica Lappin has not just been a great friend to this union but to workers and working families all across New York—whether it’s fighting for fair wages, preserving vital services like child care in the city budget, or protecting seniors as chair of the City Council’s Committee on Aging,” said Pat Purcell, the assistant to the president at UFCW Local 1500, which has 23,000 members. “We’re proud to support her candidacy for Manhattan Borough president and are ready to work hard next year to make sure she’s elected.” Lappin, who is expected to face off against City Councilwoman Gale Brewer, City Councilman Robert Jackson and former Lower Manhattan Community Board 1 chair Julie Menin in the 2013 campaign, has raised $650,000 so far, and her campaign anticipates maxing out on fundraising this year, according to a spokesman. Jackson, who was recently endorsed by former mayor David Dinkins, also has garnered some early union support, from IATSE Local One, the Stagehands Union.
UPDATED: This post has been updated to reflect the fact that Robert Jackson is also a candidate for Manhattan Borough president.
