I just got a notice that Congressman Jerrold Nadler will be volunteering at the Masbia Soup Kitchen this afternoon in the ultra-Orthodox Brooklyn neighborhood of Boro Park. This is notable for a couple reasons.
Nadler has always represented the Brooklyn neighborhood, even though the bulk of his district is in Manhattan. But after this latest round of redistricting, Nadler’s portion of Boro Park has grown substantially larger, including swaths of Kensington and Midwood. One source told me that Nadler hadn’t been to Masbia in six years, but a spokesman for the congressman said he was there in 2007.
“He is going to Masbia to visit an important organization that serves his constituents. ,” said Ilan Kayatsky, Nadler’s spokesman.
Masbia is a popular destination for local politicians looking to improve their relations with the ultra-Orthodox community. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos popped in a few months ago, as did Speaker Christine Quinn.
For his part, Nadler was recently in Israel visiting a grave yard where Jewish headstone had been desecrated. Some rocks were thrown, narrowly missing the congressman. Nadler’s also looking to take over the popular New York Deli Day luncheon in Washington from retiring Congressman Gary Ackerman.
