Professor Files to Run Against State Sen. Tom Libous

A History Professor named Barrett David Esworthy registered a campaign committee today to run in the 52nd Senate district, against Sen. Tom Libous.

Esworthy’s online presence is limited, so it is unclear what his party affiliation is. Requests for comment were not immediately returned.

Esworthy appears to be a 2006 PhD graduate of SUNY Buffalo and currently teaches history at Tompkins Cortland Community College. He also appears to have taught history at some point at SUNY Cortland. A handful of students weighing in on his performance at ratemyprofessors.com praised his “dark humor.”

In 2002, he published what looks to be his graduate dissertation, titled “Freedom From Want: Blacks and the Struggle Against Inequality in Buffalo, New York, 1930-1960.”

Next semester, during what would be campaign season, he is listed as teaching two courses: World History Since 1500, and American History Since 1877.
The Legislature’s resident historian, Assemblyman Jack McEneny, is not going to run for reelection in the fall, so perhaps a new historian sees an opening.
