City Council Speaker Christine Quinn

With the Campaign Finance Board releasing campaign filing disclosures this week, it was a surprise to see that one high profile mayoral candidate omitted a campaign event from her expenditure report: City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Back in September, City & State reported that Quinn’s finance chair, Sally Susman, hosted an event during the week of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. intended to introduce the Speaker to Democratic Party activists around the country and “expand her brand”. After browsing through Quinn’s recent filing report, no record of the expenditure was made, and Susman could not have paid for it as she has already maxed out her in-kind contributions to Quinn’s campaign.

After inquiring about the omission with Quinn’s campaign, a spokesperson said that they would be amending the report to reflect the cost of the event.

And I’m sure by “surprised” you meant “not surprised at all.”

Why are we not surprised? Money is fungible. And, for this crowd, plenty of it has found its way into odd places…never to be heard of again. Read “slush” fund scandal.
