TWU Local 100 To Back Espaillat
From today’s Heard Around Town:
* The Transport Workers Union Local 100 is set to throw its endorsement to Manhattan State Sen. Adriano Espaillat‘s congressional campaign today, according to a source with direct knowledge of the endorsement. The transit workers union’s leadership unanimously voted to back Espaillat, the source added, and could well provide a major boost, not only because of the union’s size, but because of its heavily African-American membership. Espaillat is running in a five-way race that includes veteran Rep. Charlie Rangel — and Espaillat is trying to cut into Rangel’s Harlem-based black base. The endorsement decision was significant enough to Rangel that he showed up at a TWU Local 100 screening yesterday, the source added, along with fellow candidates Espaillat, Joyce Johnson and Clyde Williams. Rangel has gotten the lion’s share of the labor support in the race, though Espaillat had previously landed the support of the Corrections Officers.
