Stronger than Ever: Our Commitment to New York’s Health & Prosperity

Creating jobs, health care coverage, COVID-19 testing and vaccination. Just some of the ways EmblemHealth is investing in its members and communities.
January 11, 2021

For more than 80 years, EmblemHealth has worked to make quality health benefits accessible and affordable to New Yorkers. We were founded at the height of the Great Depression to provide coverage to the men and women of New York’s labor unions and remain a dedicated partner to the City of New York today. As we look ahead to the New Year and our post-COVID-19 recovery, we remain committed to investing in our members and communities through programs, benefits and local partnerships.

More than a third of EmblemHealth’s workforce in New York City is proudly union. Throughout our family of companies’ more than 50 office locations in the five boroughs and Long Island, we deliver programs and services for the mental, physical, and financial health of New Yorkers—all while creating local jobs. In 2020, during the most difficult year our city had faced in generations, EmblemHealth invested more than $100 million in contracts with New York businesses, including women and minority-owned companies.

At the start of the pandemic, EmblemHealth acted quickly to include coverage of COVID-19 testing for office visits and emergency department visits with no copayments or cost-sharing for our members who met CDC guidelines. In addition to expanding COVID-19 testing, we have partnered with local organizations and elected officials to address the threat of a “twindemic”—the overlap of the coronavirus pandemic and the flu season—facing underserved communities.

Throughout the pandemic, EmblemHealth has been committed to expanding crucial COVID-19 testing and treatment, providing food and resources, and expanding the availability of flu vaccinations for the workers and communities who need care the most. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we announced partnerships with Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State to expand access to testing in partnership with AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY), part of EmblemHealth’s family of companies. ACPNY is a medical group practice with 40 locations throughout New York City and Long Island, including many of the communities that have been hit the hardest by COVID-19.

To ensure our members have seamless access to our services during the pandemic and beyond, we’ve adapted how we provide care, including offering more virtual care options and delivering prescription medications at home. We now offer many new resources to help navigate the health care system and rewards for healthy habits — all with the service our members on the front lines deserve.

We offer our members the convenience of using “telehealth” services for non-urgent medical care. In addition to expanding our virtual services, in 2020 we partnered with Medly Pharmacy, a full-service digital pharmacy, to deliver prescription medication right to doorsteps of customers in New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey with same-day delivery options. For those who want to continue their health journey in person, EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care, with locations throughout New York, provides in-person support, free health and wellness classes, and access to community resources—now with virtual options.

As a non-profit based in New York, EmblemHealth reinvests in the physical and financial health of the city we serve. We have a longstanding partnership with the City of New York and labor unions, providing coverage for more than 1 million City of New York employees and their families, including police officers, firefighters, and teachers. From 2015 to 2018, we delivered the City of New York health care savings of more than $2 billion while maintaining or enhancing member benefits at no costs. City of New York employees have access to EmblemHealth’s City of New York HMO Preferred Plan, which combines a personalized health care experience with concierge services, including a dedicated Gold Line Service exclusively for City of New York members, and a healthy rewards program with one-on-one coaching.

EmblemHealth is committed to the hardest working people we know—New York’s labor community, essential workers and the City of New York. Our members are the backbone of this city, with many working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Investing in the health and well-being of New Yorkers has been our commitment and mission since we were founded 80 years ago. From the people we hire, to the programs we design and the doctors and partners we work with—we’re committed to putting our members first every day. As recovery efforts continue, our promise to New York is stronger than ever.
