Poll: New York’s Earth Day environmental initiatives

Assessing legislation on plastic and paper bags and new rules for buildings.
April 23, 2019

To mark Earth Day, politicians have been talking about how to protect the environment – and in some cases, they’ve been passing legislation aimed at doing just that.

In recent weeks, the state Legislature approved a ban on plastic bags, while the New York City Council passed a legislative package that includes a new 5-cent charge on paper bags as well as another law requiring mid-sized and large buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is aiming to “ban inefficient all-glass buildings that waste energy and reduce vehicle emissions.”

The various measures have won both praise and criticism. So in this week’s reader poll, we’re asking you to weigh in.
