Keeping New York Safe

New York City was already on edge about rising gun violence, lawlessness and hate crimes when the April attack on a Brooklyn subway happened. Confronting these challenges, the NYPD remains steadfast in its mission to reduce crime and fight the rising toll of gun violence on the streets of New York City. What can be done on a city and state level to protect New Yorkers from crimes on their streets, their homes, their subways and their places of businesses? What are the mental health and homeless initiatives that are currently in place and what are new ideas? What are the newest laws, technology, and community programs that can make New York safer?

  • Ben Max, Executive Editor, Gotham Gazette (moderator)
  • John B. DeVito, Special Agent in Charge, New York, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
  • Michael Joy, Product Specialist, Digital Evidence Management, Cellebrite
  • Kieran Carroll, Chief Strategy Officer, ZeroEyes
  • Anil Chitkara, Founder and Head of Corporate Development, Evolv Technology

Protecting New York’s Infrastructure

From disaster response to emergency preparedness and management, protecting a city and state as large as New York requires many resources. What is being done to protect our infrastructure including digital networks, transportation, real estate, financial institutions, utilities, healthcare and public spaces? How are local, state, and federal security entities working together to stop future terrorist attacks and other dangerous incidents that are becoming a daily occurrence?

  • Jeff McLeod, Specialist Leader, Cyber and Strategic Risk, Deloitte (moderator)
  • Jackie Bray, Commissioner, New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES)
  • Daniel Krantz, Managing Partner, SWAC (Secure Worker Access Consortium)
  • New York State Senator Kevin Parker, District 21

Securing New York's Information

Governor Hochul dedicated an unprecedented $61.9 million investment in New York State’s cybersecurity infrastructure as part of the State’s FY23 budget, doubling the previous investment.  From politically motivated hacks to data breaches in every kind of NY institution, digital information is increasingly vulnerable to those seeking to do harm. Governments and businesses must keep up with technological developments to keep data secure. But in an ever-changing technological environment, including crisis management, emergency preparedness, the development of 5G, artificial intelligence, and more, what is being done to ensure NY’s information is kept safe?

  • Minerva Tantoco, Chief AI Officer, The NYU McSilver Institute (moderator)
  • Phil Swain, CISO, Extreme Networks
  • Jason White, Senior Solutions Architect, Trellix

2:30 PM

Public Safety for All

Public safety means ensuring communities—especially historically marginalized communities—have the resources to address critical social problems in an effective and humane way. What systems are in place to keep everyone safe and healthy? What are community leaders and organizations, advocates, police officers, first responders and local government officials doing to rethink public safety in an effective, equitable and sustainable way? How are we dealing with mental health issues in terms of dealing with the mentally ill and keeping everyone safe?

  • Joshua Solomon, Capitol Bureau Reporter, The Times Union (moderator)
  • Nick E. Smith, First Deputy Public Advocate of NYC
  • Jason Hansman, Acting Co-Director, Mayor's Office of Community Mental Health
  • David Carlucci, Former Senator & Chairman, Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities
  • Gary Jenkins, Commissioner, New York City Department of Social Services
  • Kenneth E. Corey, Chief of Department, NYPD
