New York’s transit systems were hit especially hard during the pandemic.  There were also more cars, bikes and scooters on the road and massive improvements were made to existing systems. The last few years has given us a chance to re-examine and enhance transportation systems across the city and state. This event bought together experts across sectors to assess the current state of New York’s transportation systems, break down recent legislative actions, and look towards the future of all things coming and going in New York.

Upgrading New York’s Transportation Infrastructure

New York is pressing forward in addressing an array of transportation infrastructure needs. New York City is upgrading bus and subway systems, adding ferry routes, building EV charging infrastructure, expanding bike sharing options to the outer boroughs and offering more accessibility options. State officials are boosting funding for state and local infrastructure, both for downstate mass transit as well as highways, bridges, rail and aviation infrastructure across the state. Federal funds are flowing in, including on projects to help reconnect urban neighborhoods. Which of these top transportation projects are being prioritized and how will they facilitate regional economic growth?

Solving the NY's Transit Puzzle

After the pandemic, public transit satisfaction decreased in terms of safety, reliability and overall usage, however in the last 15 months usage has been trending UP across subway, bus and paratransit.  At the same time, New York has been working to reduce traffic, improve air quality and provide more resources to invest in major public transit projects. Yet the plan has drawn complaints from politicians, drivers, workers and businesses who are opposed to the new tolls. We will discuss the idea of certain exemptions for groups and industries,  how policymakers can strike the right balance between raising revenue and not stifling low-income workers and commuters, as well as how new ideas and technologies can be implemented to ensure the best NY transit experience.

  • Michael R. Fleischer, Attorney, Brown & Weinraub, PLLC (Moderator)
  • Richard Davey, President, New York City Transit, MTA
  • Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, Sponsored ‘Fix the MTA’ bill
  • Eric Beaton, Deputy Commissioner for Transportation Planning and Management, New York City Department of Transportation
  • Michael C. Woloz, President & CEO, CMW Strategies
  • Phil Jones, Senior Government Relations Director, North U.S., Lime
  • Brian W. Simon, Founder and Managing Partner, Hollis Public Affairs, Inc.

The Future of NY Transportation

Transportation in New York is being disrupted by digital platforms that move people in new ways.  What is being done to promote efficient and safer transit use?  How are electric-powered bikes, cargo bikes, and scooters transforming how New Yorkers get around?  How can we transform our car-centric streets into spaces that support a diversity of transportation options?  How do we make transportation more accessible and affordable with financial incentives, while building new infrastructure for safe and convenient travel.  New York City and the state are working together to modernize transportation through innovation, technology, sustainability, accessibility and more.

  • Jovia Radix, Senior Vice President, Corporate & Legislation, Kasirer (Moderator)
  • Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Sponsor, Safety Technology Bill in Vehicles

Transportation Projects Happening in New York Now

As New York embarks on an array of major transportation infrastructure projects, innovation in the industry offers the prospect of cutting costs, minimizing delays and improving outcomes. How are the biggest projects that are underway or in the works utilizing new processes, materials, methods and tools? What has the redevelopment of JFK Airport and similar projects done for its communities and NY as a whole? What are the best ways to help promote and support innovative ways of planning, designing, building and maintaining New York's transportation infrastructure? What is the role of public private partnerships, MWBEs and environmentally conscious planning on New York's biggest projects and initiatives?

  • Sean Crowley, Partner, Government Relations, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP (Moderator)

Transporting all of New York

Throughout New York, different types of alternative transportation have emerged helping commuters connect more easily. Transit systems are making more stations accessible and upgrading antiquated features. Congestion pricing is proposed to reduce traffic, improve air quality and provide more resources to invest in projects. From replacing hundred-year-old freight bridges to revving up creation of an electric vehicle network, New York is fast-tracking a $32.8-billion capital program that prioritizes reconnecting communities, rehabilitating crucial links and improving sustainability and resilience. What is in NY’s future to build, expand and upgrade airports, bike lanes, bistate rail lines, waterways, bridges, highways and roads?

  • Justin Lapatine, Partner, Global Strategy Group (Moderator)
