How Tech Can Move Government Forward

Whether modernizing our hospitals, schools, businesses, structures and transport, New York’s tech sector is at the forefront of rapidly developing systems that are the backbone of our lives. What are the most up-to-date systems and how will--and do--automated systems like AI fit? Modernization is imperative but how  can we cut through the usual red tape and get things to progress faster and more efficiently? What should we prioritize on, and what are best practices to advance? We will address ways private companies are and can assist in bridging the technology gap and work to make these agencies stronger. This session will also discuss future workforce development, where to focus, what to prioritize, and how to proceed.

  • Ben Max, Executive Editor and Program Director, Center for New York City Law at New York Law School & Host, Max Politics podcast (Moderator)
  • Tina Kim, Deputy Comptroller for State Government Accountability, State Comptroller's Office
  • Dawn Pinnock, Commissioner, Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), New York City

Upgrading and Protecting New York’s Cyber + Physical Infrastructures

Even with the latest innovations in place, the infrastructure and technology used to keep New Yorkers safe, healthy, moving and connected are never completely secure. This panel will discuss how government agencies are balancing digital vs. analog, securing broadband access, protecting net neutrality, keeping our information private and how we can make our systems, transport, education, work, rest and play--as safe as possible. We will discuss working together to build a more resilient infrastructure, including public safety services and other ways to improve responses to possible emergency situations.

  • Holly Pretsky, Deputy Managing Editor, City & State New York (Moderator)
  • Roger L.  Parrino Sr., Director of Preparedness, Intelligence and Inspections, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ)

How New York Can Get to Full Connectivity

This panel will discuss the tech developments that are changing the way New Yorkers live and do business. New York is continuing to build statewide broadband internet access through an initiative involving a $1.4 billion program that will help to expand high-speed online access for unserved and underserved communities, provide a $30 per month internet subsidy for low-income households, and provide grants to assist with construction projects to lay fiber optic cables. This panel will also explore how full connectivity has expanded essential health, safety, and education services, and the investment necessary to create a more connected, equitable, and economically viable New York.

  • John Celock, Special Projects Editor, City & State NY (Moderator)
  • Joshua Breitbart, Senior Vice President, ConnectALL at Empire State Development
  • Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Chair, Internet & Technology Committee
  • James Saarikko, Senior Director of Solution Architecture (Global), Extreme Networks
  • Alex Camarda, Associate Vice President, State Government Affairs, Charter Communications
  • Brett Sikoff, Executive Director, Franchise Administration and Broadband, New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI).

Improving New York Through Technology and Leveraging Data

Sharing data is necessary for top government performance throughout government agencies, and departments. However, implementing successful data sharing programs have proven to be challenging. Leveraging data and updated performance metrics are helping make city government more efficient, transparent, and accountable. Our panel will speak about leveraging data to improve systems to better serve all New Yorkers including and most importantly, the underserved.

  • Annie McDonough, Deputy City Hall Reporter, City & State NY (Moderator)
