What Does the Future of Public Education in New York Look Like?

In May 2023, Governor Hochul highlighted historic education funding included in the Budget, marking the highest level of State aid ever. Funding includes programs for full day Pre-K, expansion of charter schools, special education tuition, after school care and programs, technological developments and more. What can New York expect in terms of statewide testing, ensuring school safety, funding and its correlation with achievement? New York has a lot to fix and this panel will begin to explore these opportunities.

  • Lara Lai, Senior Education Policy Analyst, New York City Comptroller’s Office
  • John C. Liu, Chair, State Senate Committee on New York City Education
  • Rachael Gazdick, CEO, New York Edge

Technological + Special Programs for New York Students

The pandemic made it clear that tech integration and tools are everyone’s job. We also know how programs outside of school make a major impact on how our children develop. Now it’s time for New York to think about how those tools work best in and out of our classrooms. This session will dive into how to use technology, the latest tools and trends to support both in-person and digital learning, and the programs that are helping our students develop into better people.

  • Stephen Cockrell, Chief Executive Officer, Fund for Public Schools
  • Rita Joseph, Chair, New York City Council Education Committee
  • Lynette Guastaferro, Chief Executive Officer, Teaching Matters

New Trends in Higher Education

New York must continue to prioritize resilience and innovation across all aspects of our higher education institutions. How can we evolve with the changing landscape and work with the innovative ways higher education is navigating and reimagining to meet the needs of our students? Where are we now after the past disruptions in the admissions process, standardized tests, dorm and dining options and student loans? How will New York address these issues?

  • Dr. William Murphy, Deputy Commissioner, Higher Education, New York State Education Department
  • Toby Ann Stavisky, Chair, State Senate Higher Education Committee
  • Eric Dinowitz, Chair, New York City Council Higher Education Committee
  • Rebecca Watts, Ph.D, Regional VP, WGU /Western Governors University

Providing Services for Special Ed, Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities

New York is focused on improving the educational outcomes of students with disabilities. Research shows that most students with disabilities can meet high standards when provided with meaningful access and participation in the general education curriculum and appropriate, high quality specially designed instruction and support services. And for all students, mental health and wellness at the schools has become common and necessary. We discuss what has/needs to be put in place to make sure our children have all that they need.

  • Shelley Mayer, Chair, State Senate Education Committee
  • Erica Lynne Smith, PhD, LCSW, Director of School Mental Health Programs, Office of School Health, DOHMH/DOE School Mental Health Program
  • Christina Foti, Chief of Special Education, New York City Department of Education
