New York’s Current and Future Education in a Post COVID 19 Era

City & State's 2021 Virtual Education in New York event will take what we have done for years with our in-person event and transform the program with new situations that have come out of COVID 19. It will offer industry executives, public sector leaders and academics the opportunity to share ideas and debate over critical issues such as remote learning, standardized testing, public school funding and more.

Public Schools in a Post-COVID World

New York recently opened a platform to seek public input in developing New York’s American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) Fund plan while the NYC Mayor announced a full reopening of schools for the Fall. What does this look like? How can schools across the city and state open and remain safe? And on a technological level, issues prior to Covid still stand. What do we have in place on a physical and cybersecurity level? How can NY stay above the curve with the latest developments and what have we missed learning about during this period? Hear from the experts.

Higher Education Plans for New York

While many schools partially reopened this year, the plan is to have all schools fully reopened by Fall with mandatory vaccinations for all students. How can we achieve these goals? How has COVID 19 disrupted the admissions process, standardized tests, dorm and dining options and student loans? How will New York address these issues?

  • Gregg Bishop, Executive Director, Social Justice Fund (moderator)
  • William Murphy, Deputy Commissioner for Higher Education, New York State Education Department
  • Toby Ann Stavisky, Chair, State Senate Committee on Higher Education
  • Dr. Marsha A. Pollard, Provost, Berkeley College

Erasing Education Disparities in New York

Educational disparity was never more evident than when the pandemic hit last spring. New York has been working to improve conditions since then. What will become of standardized tests in the future? What improvements will be made in underprivileged zip codes from everything from apartment internet access to laptops? What kind of new mentorship programs are out there to assist our youth? How will Charter Schools play a part? How will the special education programs and possibly preschool for all be implemented?

  • Rebecca Lewis, Reporter, City & State NY (moderator)
  • John C. Liu, Chair, State Senate Committee on New York City Education
  • Adrienne Austin, Deputy Chancellor of Community Empowerment, Partnerships, and Communications, New York City Department Of Education
