Quantum computing promises breakthroughs in science, logistics and defense. But it also poses one of the most urgent cybersecurity challenges of the decade. Once cryptographically relevant quantum computers emerge, they will be able to break the encryption protecting sensitive government and defense data. That makes the transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) not just an IT project, but a national security imperative.
At the 2025 Quantum Summit, Matt Mickelson, senior principal for research in MITRE Labs’ cyber technology office, and Hart Montgomery, CTO of the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust and director of the Post-Quantum Cryptography Alliance, outlined what agencies must know to prepare.
