Special Podcast: 9/11 through their eyes, Part 2

Fifteen years after the Twin Towers collapsed in Lower Manhattan, Bernard Kerik and Thomas Von Essen still recall every moment, every decision, every emotional, gut-wrenching reaction to the attack from a perspective that was far too close for comfort.

Such is the burden that Kerik and Von Essen, the former NYPD and FDNY commissioners, respectively, have to shoulder to this day as the leaders of two agencies that lost a combined 366 members of their ranks (343 firefighters, 23 police officers) on September 11.

On part two of our special 9/11 podcast, Kerik and Von Essen walk us through their experience that day – where they were when the first plane hit, overcoming the whirlwind of visceral, crippling emotions to make clear-headed decisions, and the anxiety and uncertainty of what the attacks would portend in the future.

You can also listen to part one of our 9/11 podcast, with former deputy mayor of operations Joe Lhota and NY1 anchor Cheryl Wills, who recounted their vantage points of 9/11.
