Editor’s note: A new era at City & State

Jeff Coltin takes the helm of the magazine ahead of a big year in New York politics.

It’s my first day back at City & State New York as editor-in-chief, and I couldn’t be more excited to take the helm.

Who would have predicted a year ago we’d be days from seeing Zohran Mamdani inaugurated as mayor? Who would have predicted a week ago we’d be going into 2026 without Elise Stefanik as a candidate?

No matter what happens, City & State will be on it, with frequent scoops, sharp analysis, clear reporting, and always a healthy bit of fun.

City & State is the magazine for New York’s political community — the world of voters, officials, staff, advocates, candidates and more. And I take seriously journalism’s role in informing the public and holding power to account to make government work better.

So I want to be hearing from you, the readers – with news tips, most importantly, but also with feedback about how to make City & State even better as we approach our 20th anniversary. Catch me at City & State events, or drop me a line at JColtin@cityandstateny.com.

I started at City & State as an intern more than a decade ago. I’ve loved seeing it grow, and I’m excited to be joining this great team of journalists again.
