Heard Around Town: Residents want more parking with La Guardia upgrades

La Guardia Airport has the worst rating of any major mass transit hub in New York City, according to a recent survey, but most travelers are aware of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s planned renovations at the Queens airport and say they are more likely to use it as a result.

Grand Central Terminal and John F. Kennedy International airport were the city’s most highly rated mass transit hubs, with 62 percent of respondents describing Grand Central as excellent or good and 53 percent of respondents rating JFK airport as excellent or good.

By a 2-1 margin, air travelers prefer JFK airport over La Guardia. Just 23 percent of respondents said that La Guardia was excellent or good, while 43 percent described it as average or poor.

Additionally, the survey found a majority of travelers use car services or taxis to get to an airport. At La Guardia, 64 percent of city residents use car service or taxis to travel to the airport. Additionally, 66 percent of respondents said the renovated La Guardia Airport should have expanded parking facilities.

The survey, conducted by The Parkside Group at the request of The Parking Spot, surveyed 600 air travelers living in New York City in over a five-day period late August. The margin of error is 4 percent, with a 95 percent confidence level.

The Parking Spot is a near-airport parking company that operates five facilities at metro-New York airports.
