Poll: Will any women run for NYC mayor in 2021?

While the next New York City mayoral election is still a couple years away, it’s striking that all of the early frontrunners are men. In this week’s reader poll, we ask whether any women will run for mayor in 2021, who’s likely to enter the fray, and whether a woman will win.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio may or may not run for president, but his flirtation with a White House bid may relegate him to lame-duck status at City Hall and hasten the competition to succeed him.

Although the 2021 mayoral election is a couple years away – or sooner, should de Blasio be elected president – it’s striking that four of the early frontrunners (City Comptroller Scott Stringer, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams) are men. What’s more, since Letitia James left the city’s public advocate post to become state attorney general, all four of the current citywide officeholders are male: de Blasio, Stringer, Johnson and Jumaane Williams, who succeeded James as public advocate.

Yet a number of women have been rumored to be potential candidates for mayor, including Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, former Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, former Council Speaker Christine Quinn, former Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, first lady Chirlane McCray, city Census czar Julie Menin, Success Academy founder Eva Moskowitz, and even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Will any of them – or any other women – try to become the city’s next mayor?
