City & State presents the 2025 Top Mental Health Care Providers. Lantern Community Services

Mental health has always been critical to an individual’s well-being, though it hasn’t always received the attention it deserves. In recent decades, there have been signs that the stigma surrounding mental illness is declining. At the same time, many measures of mental illness are increasing, pointing to the need for further investment in high-quality care.

New York is among the nation’s leaders in ensuring that there are enough effective treatment options available. The state recently ranked first in Mental Health America’s “State of Mental Health in America” report, which according to Gov. Kathy Hochul demonstrates “that we remain on the right track in our concerted efforts to address the mental health crisis among children and adults.”

City & State’s inaugural Top Mental Health Care Providers features dozens of the elite mental health providers in New York. The list, which includes large and small providers from across the state, puts a spotlight on the innovative programs and standout services being offered to ensure that New Yorkers are able to thrive and successfully face challenges to their mental health.

Our mobile teams work with children, youth, families and adults, meeting them where they are – physically and emotionally. Working in partnership with hospitals, medical providers and older adult centers, we reach out to the most vulnerable and isolated adults in the region and provide professional treatment that supports their overall health and well-being. Overview: Spectrum Health & Human Services provides comprehensive behavioral health care across Western New York, addressing clinical and social needs from Buffalo’s urban core to its rural communities. Beyond our traditional outpatient services, we believe in meeting people where they are; offering licensed programs embedded within schools, homeless shelters and medical offices to provide care in trusted community settings. The Buffalo Hope COMHPS team promotes emotional wellness through senior centers, schools and community events, while our Mobile Therapy Unit reaches individuals in remote areas of Wyoming and Allegany counties. Our housing, care coordination and reentry programs foster hope, stability and recovery.

Standout services: We live our mission to build a community where behavioral health care is accessible, inclusive and free from stigma. Beyond our seven Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, we embed services where people already feel connected, like the Buffalo City Mission and the Boys & Girls Club and other spaces, to bring care directly to those who need it most. Since 2020, our annual Not One More: Stand Together to End Overdose event has united providers, families and community members in prevention and remembrance of those lost. We produce a monthly podcast and free webinars which amplify diverse community voices.

Overview: The Bridge is a leading behavioral health nonprofit whose mission is to change lives by providing help, hope and opportunity to the most vulnerable New Yorkers. Through our integrated network of programs, The Bridge provides mental health and substance use treatment, supportive housing and community-based services to adults living with serious mental illness and/or substance use, many of whom were formerly homeless. We build and operate supportive housing, with over 1,500 units in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn. Serving over 5,000 clients annually, The Bridge is dedicated to helping our clients on a path to maintain wellness and independence.

Standout services: The Bridge has a continuum of services to meet the needs of people facing some of the most intractable behavioral health issues. Over 900 skilled staff members deliver specialized services, meeting our clients where they are in their recovery. We have developed many innovative programs, including Aging Services. This program was the first of its kind in New York City to use mobile teams to deliver services to older adults, allowing them to stay in their homes and avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and institutionalization. With compassion and commitment, we help thousands of New Yorkers find stability, purpose and a place to call home.

We’re investing in our staff through our pioneering Social Work Residency, now in its third year, our Learning Department that helps us maintain clinical excellence and our Six Sigma projects that equip our staff to deliver the highest standard of care. We’re also expanding access to services through our network of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, telehealth and school partnerships, and by delivering targeted services to communities across New York City.

Its multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, creative arts therapists, counselors, primary care providers and case managers provides culturally responsive services that integrate mental health and primary care. Volunteers of America-Greater New York

Headquarters: Manhattan
Creston Avenue Residence in the Bronx. / Volunteers of America-Greater New York

Overview: Volunteers of America-Greater New York is an anti-poverty organization with a rich 129-year legacy of serving individuals and families in need. Our vision is to end homelessness in the New York area by providing innovative housing, health and wealth-building services to our neighbors who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. Through 70-plus programs located in New York City, northern New Jersey and Westchester, we deliver services to more than 35,000 adults and children annually.

Standout services: The instability and trauma of homelessness can exacerbate health conditions, which is why it’s said that “housing is health care.” Once in stable housing, our clients can focus on their health and begin to address the barriers that previously prevented them from accessing reliable, high-quality health care. At VOA-GNY, our case managers and social workers meet clients where they’re at, using a trauma-informed approach to connect them to the health resources they need, including mental health services. We’ve integrated this support into our housing programs by embedding licensed social workers within these sites. We are also working to elevate clinical standards citywide.

Standout services: Depth and breadth of their personalization make WellLife Network’s services stand out. WellLife’s clinicians and support teams adapt services to individual needs, from therapy and medication management to skill-building, vocational training and wellness supports.
