De Blasio Bets on Rangers Win with Montreal Mayor

Mayor Bill de Blasio might have a hockey bet with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre in the bag—a bag of bagels, that is.

De Blasio reached out to Coderre on Twitter Monday to make a friendly wager on the New York Rangers-Montreal Canadiens Eastern Conference finals series. De Blasio bet a bag of bagels and a New York Rangers jersey on a Rangers win.

Coderre then upped the ante, betting that if the Habs win, de Blasio would have to visit Montreal City Hall, declare that Montreal bagels are the best, wear a Canadiens jersey and fly a Canadiens flag over New York City Hall.

The mayors made the wager before Monday night’s game in Montreal with the Rangers already up 1-0 in the series following a 7-2 rout in Game 1 Saturday.

By late Monday night, de Blasio was one step closer to earning bagel and hockey bragging rights for New York City with the Rangers’ 3-1 victory. The win gave New York a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

For the Canadiens and Rangers, the stakes are just a bit higher—a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals is on the line.
