Grant Calls Kennedy “More Mean-Spirited” In Senate Race Rematch

Out here in Buffalo, the primary election between incumbent state Senator Tim Kennedy and Erie County Legislature Minority Leader Betty Jean Grant has only gotten more sour with time. Two years ago, Grant challenged Kennedy for the Democratic ticket for the 63rd state Senate seat, and the two shared no love, trading snipes and brickbats during a bitter campaign that came down to the wire. This time around, the hostility has only increased, at least according to Grant.

“[Kennedy’s] a whole lot more mean-spirited than he was before,” Grant says. “I was surprised. He sent out mailers accusing me of lying to the people and being very negative. But you know, it is what it is.”

With only three hours before the polls close, Grant seemed dispirited and resigned. She repeatedly mentioned Kennedy’s powerful union support and bemoaned her own lack of campaign funds.

“I don’t have enough money to hire a press person,” she said. “I’m doing my own press. But it is what it is.”
