The Democratic Socialists of America are having a moment with Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral win. But during the Biden administration, the overall membership of both the national DSA and NYC-DSA stagnated and even fell – until it picked up again due to President Donald Trump’s reelection in 2024 and Mamdani’s campaign in the spring of 2025. This graph, based on monthly data published by the DSA, shows the number of dues-paying members since February 2020.

In October 2024, the month that Mamdani launched his campaign, NYC-DSA had 5,910 members, while the national DSA as a whole had 50,713 members. By December 2025, NYC-DSA had grown to 13,145 members, and the national DSA had grown to 92,912 members.
