Who voted for Eric Adams and Zohran Mamdani in the past two Democratic primaries?

There were a few areas of overlap between their 2021 and 2025 campaigns.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani have more in common than people think: overlapping support. Mamdani exceeded expectations in a likely primary win against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Given their shared appeal to more moderate Black voters, Cuomo was expected to perform well in the areas Adams won in the 2021 primary. Mamdani’s democratic socialist platform is a stark departure from Adams’ centrist approach, yet the Queens lawmaker did well in some neighborhoods – down to individual election districts – that Adams dominated in 2021. With the scandal-scarred mayor running as an independent in November, will these neighborhoods stand by Mamdani in the general election, or will Adams win them back?

Parkchester/Westchester Square, Bronx

Adams 2021: Earned the most first-round votes in all but two election districts

Mamdani 2025: Earned the most first-round votes in the majority of election districts

Adams took almost all of Parkchester and Westchester Square in 2021, and Mamdani clinched a majority of the election districts in the area. The neighborhoods are predominantly Hispanic – mainly Dominican and Puerto Rican – but there is a sizable Black community and small enclave of South Asian voters. Mamdani’s margins were generally higher than Adams’ in these areas, winning most with a majority rather than a plurality and with the mayor winning most with a plurality in the more competitive 2021 field.

Adams 2021: Earned the most first-round votes in the vast majority of election districts

Mamdani 2025: Earned the most first-round votes in the vast majority of election districts

Many voters in Jamaica, Queens – specifically along the Hillside Avenue corridor heading east into Queens Village and Glen Oaks – backed both Adams and Mamdani in the past two mayoral elections. The corridor has large proportions of Latino and Black people, in addition to a distinct and growing South Asian population that lines the avenue that likely contributed to Mamdani’s success.

North Shore, Staten Island

Adams 2021: Earned the most first-round votes in the majority of election districts

Mamdani 2025: Almost won a majority of election districts

The most confusing overlap of them all: parts of the North Shore of Staten Island voted for a socialist. In 2021, Adams received the most first-round votes in almost every election district lining Staten Island’s North Shore. In 2025, some election districts in Port Richmond, St. George and Tompkinsville picked lefty Mamdani over Cuomo. Mamdani may have been boosted by the increasing number of Asian and Muslim voters on the island.
