New York City Council Member Julie Won filed to run in New York’s 7th Congressional District on Monday. Won joins an already hotly contested race that is dividing New York Democrats in one of the city’s most progressive districts, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Won represents a western Queens district that’s almost entirely overlapping with the 7th Congressional District. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday afternoon.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is also running for the seat, as is Assembly Member Claire Valdez, who represents a western Queens district that overlaps heavily with the congressional district. Both New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Democratic Socialists of America have endorsed Valdez. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, whose retirement is opening up the seat, endorsed Reynoso.

Reynoso declined to comment on Won joining the race.

This is a developing story.
