2026 New York state elections
Where do all the key New York state legislative races stand?
We’ve been closely watching these contests all election season. Here are the districts that flipped, and others that are too close to call.

Democrats dominated in southern Brooklyn. Long Island and upstate seats seen as long shots appear set to go blue. And the state Senate will have a Democratic supermajority once again, with the party on track to potentially gain six seats, if the current results hold.
Tuesday’s “blue wave” washed all the way down the ballot, with huge gains for Democrats in both state Senate and Assembly races. Some of those wins were concentrated (like in southern Brooklyn and Long Island) and others are still playing out in slightly too close to call races.
Earlier this year, City & State published a list of state legislative races to watch – the most competitive battlegrounds and potential pick-up seats. Here’s where those stand the day after the election.
Still watching
State Senate District 1
Parts of Suffolk County
Democrats may be on their way to picking up a surprising Republican state Senate seat, with Democrat Chris Murray leading Republican state Sen. Anthony Palumbo by roughly 4,000 votes on Long Island’s East End.
State Senate District 7
Nassau County, including North Hempstead
Jake Blumencranz, the Republican nominee to replace state Sen. Jack Martins on Long Island, is leading Democrat Rory Lancman by a margin of roughly 4,800 votes, in what could turn out to be one of Democrats’ few disappointments this cycle. Lancman, a former New York City Council member and Assembly member, hoped to flip this purple district.
State Senate District 9
Nassau County, including Lynbrook, Elmont and Long Beach
Democrat Lisa Vider appears set to oust Republican state Sen. Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick in Nassau County. Although the race hasn’t been called yet, Vider’s roughly 2,900-vote lead could add to Democrats’ supermajority in the state Senate.
State Senate District 43
Rensselaer County and parts of Washington and Albany counties
One of the remaining close races after election night is this upstate contest between Republican state Sen. Jake Ashby and Democrat Devin Lander – the state historian – who trails Ashby by just a few hundred votes, according to unofficial state Board of Elections results.
Assembly District 143
Western New York, including Cheektowaga, Depew and Lancaster
Republican Assembly Member Patrick Chludzinski leads Democratic challenger Ryan Taughrin by just a few hundred votes in this Western New York district that has regularly changed hands between parties.
Democratic flip
State Senate District 17
Southern Brooklyn, including Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach
Democrats are retaking southern Brooklyn. Democrat Larry He declared victory on election night in the state Senate district held by Republican state Sen. Steve Chan, one of four pickups for the Democratic Party in the area. He’s commanding victory – 57%-42%, with 99% of scanners reported – has bolstered the political machine of Assembly Member William Colton.
State Senate District 38
Rockland County
Republican state Sen. Bill Weber was ousted by Democrat Joseph Rand in this Trump +11 district in Rockland County, with Rand leading by nearly 10,000 votes on election night. Rand, the mayor of Nyack and running on the Working Families Party line as well, has won the seat back for Democrats after Weber flipped it four years ago.
State Senate District 39
Hudson Valley, including parts of Dutchess, Orange and Putnam counties
Republican state Sen. Rob Rolison’s hold on this Hudson Valley seat has finally slipped. Dutchess County Legislator Lisa Kaul clutched the seat by a more than 11,000-vote lead according to unofficial state Board of Elections results and sent the former Poughkeepsie mayor home.
State Senate District 44
Saratoga County and parts of Schenectady County
Republican state Sen. Jim Tedisco conceded to Democrat and law school professor Sarah Rogerson, one of the more significant Democratic flips given Tedisco’s more than 40 years in Albany. He previously served in the Assembly and has been a state senator since 2017.
Assembly District 16
Nassau County, including Great Neck and Port Washington
Democrats appear likely to clinch this open Assembly seat that was held by Republican Daniel Norber, who didn’t seek reelection. Democrat Kim Keiserman leads Republican David Hassid by just over 2,200 votes.
Assembly District 45
Southern Brooklyn, including Midwood, Gravesend and Brighton Beach
The blue wave didn’t miss southern Brooklyn. Joey Cohen-Saban was one of three Democratic Assembly candidates to flip Republican-held seats in the purple area, with Cohen-Saban leading Assembly Member Michael Novakhov by an authoritative 24 percentage points.
Assembly District 46
Southern Brooklyn, including Bay Ridge, Coney Island and Sea Gate
Bay Ridge Democrat Chris McCreight bested Republican Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny in his rematch election by nearly 11 percentage points.
Assembly District 107
Parts of Columbia, Rensselaer, Washington and Albany counties
Democrat Chloe Pierce claimed victory in her bid to oust Republican Assembly Member Scott Bendett, leading him 52% to 48%, according to unofficial state Board of Elections results. It’s Pierce’s second try for the seat after she failed to flip it in 2024.
Democratic hold
Assembly District 4
Suffolk County, including Port Jefferson, Setauket and Stony Brook
Incumbent Democratic Assembly Member Rebecca Kassay easily held on to her Suffolk County seat, fending off Republican challenger Will Sussman with a 16 percentage point lead.
Assembly District 11
Suffolk and Nassau counties
Democratic Assembly Member Kwani O’Pharrow held off Republican challenger Joseph Cardinale with a landslide 22 percentage point lead.
Assembly District 21
Nassau County, including Rockville Centre, Lynbrook and Baldwin
Democratic incumbent Judy Griffin will hold on to her seat, leading Republican challenger Irene Villacci by a 22 percentage point margin on election night.
Assembly District 23
Queens, including the Rockaways
Democratic New York City Council staffer Pesach Osina is leading in his quest to hold departing Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer Amato’s seat, with 52% of the vote to Republican Thomas Sullivan’s 48%. This would make Sullivan’s third failed try for this seat.
Assembly District 97
Rockland County, including Tappan, Pearl River and Monsey
Democratic Assembly Member Aron Wieder easily held on to his seat in Rockland County, blowing Republican challenger Rob Bonomolo out of the water with 60% of the vote.
Assembly District 113
Parts of Saratoga, Washington and Warren counties, including Saratoga Springs
Democratic Assembly Member Carrie Woerner held on to her seat against Republican challenger Allen Caruso, even despite a third, alleged spoiler candidate claiming the Working Families Party line, to the group’s disapproval.
Republican flip
Assembly District 119
Central New York, including Utica and Rome
In a rare bright spot for Republicans, Michael Gentile won the open seat that Democrat Marianne Buttenschon is vacating, besting Democrat Jon Lipe with roughly 53% of the vote.
