What role does the government relations sector play in New York?
No matter what business you operate in, or issue area you’re passionate about, our elected officials and agency administration shape public policy that has real world impacts. Nowhere is that more apparent than the highly-regulated utility industry. Every investment and practice National Grid undertakes is highly scrutinized. It’s important that we’re able to communicate to policymakers the effects of proposed legislation and budget proposals on our customers and our ability to provide the safe and reliable service they need to thrive.
How has the government relations sector been evolving and adapting to the current political climate?
Technology has enhanced the availability of information and the accessibility of policymakers at all levels, but it can also be overwhelming. The competition for time and attention has never been greater, making the ability to cut through the noise with credibility paramount. It is not about session days alone; how are you establishing your organization as an ever present and trusted source everyday in Albany and back home in the communities our elected officials call home?
What's on your agenda in 2026?
Affordability is front of mind for all New Yorkers. Every aspect of life has become more expensive and utility bills are central to that conversation. At the same time, reliability is becoming an increasing concern as demand on the system grows and grows. Balancing the need to alleviate bill pressures while maintaining a safe energy system requires an honest conversation about what is contributing to utility costs so that the real drivers can be addressed, while not sacrificing reliability. We’re engaged in that conversation every day because the success of our state depends on it.
