Why is upstate New York important?

Upstate New York is reimagining its economic future as innovation, industry and education converge. The groundbreaking for Micron’s facility in Clay marked a generational turning point, promising thousands of new jobs that will transform our region into a national hub for semiconductor manufacturing. SUNY Oswego is proud to call this region home and to continue preparing local talent to seize these opportunities.

What role do you play in supporting New York's upstate region?

As president of SUNY Oswego, my vision is to help build a more educated and economically vibrant region. Through our Vision 4040, we aim to double the number of degrees and credentials we award by 2040. We are advancing that mission through SUNY Oswego at Syracuse, expanding access to higher education and workforce preparation for learners across Central New York.

What's on your agenda for the coming year?

Our priority is preparing more people for the opportunities reshaping Central New York. We are expanding our Syracuse campus to increase access for adult learners, strengthen pathways to Micron and the region’s advanced manufacturing future, and deepen employer partnerships to ensure that students and working adults gain the skills needed for high-demand careers close to home.

What motivates you?

Education transformed my life, and I believe it remains the most powerful force for expanding opportunity. What motivates me is ensuring that local students, working adults and families can benefit from the growth unfolding across our region. The promise of this moment should not belong only to those who arrive here. It should also belong to the people who have long called Central New York home.
