Actor Tom Cruise shouted, “Show me the money!” in the film “Jerry Maguire.” It has become a go-to expression for getting paid, and it’s one Gov. Kathy Hochul may hear in the coming months from New Yorkers awaiting the state’s distribution of “inflation refund” checks. Hochul announced last week that payments of up to $400 will be sent in the mail this fall to 8.2 million households across the state. The governor is making the one-time payments to eligible New Yorkers to offset the increased sales taxes they paid due to inflation.
An individual making $75,000 or less will receive $200, while those making $75,000 to $150,000 will get $150. Married couples filing their taxes jointly and making $150,000 or less will receive $400, while those making $150,000 to $300,000 will receive $300.
It’s not a big payout, and it doesn’t include people who don’t have taxable income, but it does provide some relief for a broad range of New Yorkers as the governor’s bid for reelection starts to ramp up for next year. Her campaign will surely be hoping voters remember how Hochul got them that extra cash when they go to the polls.
