Eric Adams’ retirement hobbies include travel, crypto and woodworking

In a city of 30 million opinions, former New York City Mayor Eric Adams doesn’t have to listen to any of them in retirement. In response to being asked a week before leaving office whether he would miss being mayor, he said, “I’m good.” In the six months since, he has been retired dadmaxxing – embracing the freedom of not having to be up with the men after being out with the boys. Here’s what the former mayor has been up to since he left office.

Travel

While we know the first stop is always Istanbul, the first stop for the former mayor was actually Dubai on his first day out of office. He has been to China, Ethiopia, Georgia and lots of other places – in addition to becoming an Albanian citizen for some reason. These jaunts could be seen as checking off his travel bucket list – if he hadn’t already spent a good portion of his last few months in office overseas.

Saying “that’s not my problem” to the old job

As he posted in January, “Reminder: I don’t run City Hall anymore. Yelling at me on Twitter will not speed up snow removal.”

Woodworking

A classic dad hobby. In June, he posted that he was building a bookshelf with lumber from Home Depot. Hopefully his project didn’t end up how some projects do where you spend $40 and a Saturday afternoon making a crooked bookshelf only to realize you could’ve just bought one from Ikea for less.

Go to the farmers market (in the Middle East)

All the retired dads now have time to hit up the local farmers market during the day.

Complaining

When you suddenly have a lot of time on your hands, it’s natural to sit around and complain. Some people are doing it professionally on the radio, while others take to social media. Adams has been complaining about the media, including Gothamist last week and Errol Louis in January. He took on the city budget, saying he warned about a shortfall, and implored the mayor to take up his homeless encampment policy in the wake of deaths to frigid cold temperatures. Plus, he got into it with a heckler at the airport.

Hang out on a big couch talking sports with your (Fox &) Friends

There’s nothing like discussing the Knicks championship win in what became his TV home during his final year in office.

Dabble in new technology

For the self-described “tech geek,” one of his first post-mayoral ventures, the cryptocurrency NYC Token, crashed after allegations of a “rug pull,” which Adams denied. He also has experimented with posting an AI video.

Chilling

Adams said on New Year’s Eve his retirement plan was to “have a single malt scotch and smoke a cigar.” He has also continued dining out at the city’s fantastic restaurants and went to a Jay-Z concert at Yankee Stadium.
