From the publisher: Welcoming Jeff Coltin as City & State’s next editor-in-chief

An ace writer and beloved colleague returns home.

We are excited to announce that Jeff Coltin will be joining us as editor-in-chief for City & State New York.

Coltin’s long career at City & State began when he was an intern in the fall of 2014. He joined us full-time after he graduated from Fordham University as an editorial assistant in October 2015. He rose through the ranks and was serving as City Hall Bureau Chief before he departed in 2023 to write Politico’s New York Playbook newsletter.

Coltin has written some of our biggest magazine cover stories, including an award-winning profile of Ingrid Lewis-Martin that became canon and is routinely quoted by outlets like The New York Times. He was also the author of our award-winning Campaign Confidential newsletter during the 2021 city election cycle. That newsletter earned him respect and notoriety in New York’s political world.

Jeff Coltin is uniquely positioned to lead our coverage of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, and he also has big ideas for our coverage of state politics and the 2026 midterms. He has been voraciously covering the 2025 mayoral race from start to finish, has deep relationships in New York politics, and after more than two years of writing for Playbook is incredibly well-sourced. He’s also collaborated with and mentored most of our editorial staff, and he’s familiar with the work of the entire department.

“I’m so excited to be coming back to City & State. I’ve been a huge fan of the magazine since before I joined as an intern, and it’s an honor to take the helm at such a crucial and interesting time in New York politics,” Coltin said. “City & State will continue to be first read for everyone following along.”
