Here’s who owns New York’s local TV stations

Many people probably hadn’t given much thought to who owned their local TV station until the issues of freedom of speech and freedom of the press recently made headlines. Following comments from Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, Nexstar Media Group, which has a corporate office in Midtown, and Sinclair Broadcast Group announced on Sept. 17 that they would not air “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on their ABC affiliates. Shortly after, ABC suspended Kimmel from the airwaves. His suspension by ABC ended on Sept. 23, and Sinclair and Nexstar ended their preemption of Kimmel’s show on Sept. 26. Nexstar and Sinclair’s collective portfolio includes over 20% of ABC local affiliates nationwide, including various types of stations in each of New York’s 10 media markets.
